Professor Chris Baggoley

Professor Baggoley holds the titles of Professorial Fellow, College of Medicine and Public Health at the Flinders University of South Australia and Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, at the University of Adelaide.

He obtained his honours degree in Veterinary Science in 1973 in Melbourne, Victoria, after which he graduated in Medicine in 1980 in Adelaide, South Australia, later specialising in emergency medicine. He has held positions as Director of Emergency Medicine at the Flinders Medical Centre and subsequently at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was President of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine from 1996-1999.

Professor Chris Baggoley was Chief Medical Officer for South Australia from 2005-2007 and was Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Government from 2011 to 2016. During his time as CMO for Australia he undertook a number of roles with the World Health Organization. They included being a member of the IHR Roster of Experts in infectious disease, infection prevention and control and public health and emergency management; chair of the IHR Emergency Committee for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (2013-2016); member of the IHR Emergency Committee for Ebola in West Africa (2014-2016). He was a member of the WHO Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework Advisory Group from 2015 – 2021.

Professor Baggoley was a member of the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) Governing Council from 2011-2016.
