Providing tobacco cessation support and protocols

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) obliges Parties to implement measures to promote tobacco cessation and treat tobacco dependence. One of the key interventions in the MPOWER package – a set of six tobacco control measures built on the WHO FCTC to reduce demand for tobacco – is offering help to quit.

The Regional Action Plan for Tobacco Control in the Western Pacific (2020-2030) identifies strengthening tobacco cessation as an important action that countries and areas must pursue. As countries and areas continue to make progress in the implementation of strong tobacco control policies, the demand for cessation support has increased.

Regional Office works with experts and WHO Collaborating Centres in the Region to facilitate establishing and strengthening national tobacco cessation systems.

WHO works with countries to empower individuals to quit smoking through global campaigns, such as World No Tobacco Day, and education resources.
