The World Health Organization will complete 75 years on April 7, 2023 – World Health Day. Countries joined efforts in 1948, to establish WHO to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health and well-being.
The same year WHO South-East Asia Regional Office started its operations.
WHO has been working with Member States in the Region for addressing challenges, promoting Health for All, and building robust and resilient health systems. Today, the Region has eight flagship priority programmes, which are aligned to WHO’s global goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Key Highlights and Milestones
All →WHO South-East Asia Regional Office started operations in a small office in a Government of India building on 15 December 1948, the year WHO was established on 7 April. WHO SEARO too is 75!
The first Regional Committee Session of WHO South-East Asia Region was led by India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and WHO’s first Director-General Dr Brock Chisholm in New Delhi in October 1948.
